Why Layered Zones, Not a Single Perimeter

A single-perimeter security model — fence plus one access-controlled entrance — is inadequate for UAE data centres serving enterprise, government or colocation tenants, since it gives an intruder who defeats the one barrier full facility access. Layered zone design forces progressively stricter verification the closer a person gets to the server hall, matching risk to consequence.

A Typical Five-Zone Model

  • Zone 1 — Site perimeter (fencing, vehicle barriers, perimeter CCTV)
  • Zone 2 — Building entrance (reception, visitor management, mantrap)
  • Zone 3 — Office/support areas (general staff access)
  • Zone 4 — Data hall corridor (restricted, biometric or two-factor access)
  • Zone 5 — Server hall / cage (highest restriction, often per-rack or per-cage access control for colocation tenants)

Access Control Between Zones

Each zone transition should use a different, appropriately strong credential — card-only for general office areas, card-plus-PIN or biometric for the data hall corridor, and often biometric plus mantrap (preventing tailgating) at the server hall entrance itself. Colocation facilities frequently add per-cage access control so individual tenants can be granted access only to their own contracted space.

CCTV Coverage and Retention

Coverage should overlap at every zone transition with no blind spots at mantraps or cage entrances, and retention periods should be agreed against the facility's compliance requirements — UAE government and financial-sector tenants often specify longer retention than a typical commercial building.
