The current published edition, ANSI/TIA-942-C, was released in May 2024 and formally incorporated edge data center requirements previously handled through a separate addendum, introducing classifications for micro edge data centers (µEDCs), split into Type A (networked) and Type B (standalone) configurations. TIA has also opened a call for interest, in early 2026, for an AI-focused addendum to the 942-C standard.
Internationally, many data center clients instead reference the Uptime Institute's Tier Classification System (Tier I–IV), a certification-based framework administered by a private organization, with its own distinct definitions of redundancy that do not map one-to-one onto TIA-942's Rated-1 through Rated-4 scale. TIA-942 is broader in scope, addressing cabling infrastructure and facility design categories alongside resiliency rating, while Uptime Institute's system is narrower and focused specifically on infrastructure topology-based tiering with its own certification and site-audit process.
Why this matters specifically for US projects
International clients bringing a global data center program into the US market frequently specify "Tier III" design intent assuming it will translate directly into the local project's TIA-942 documentation. It does not translate automatically — Uptime Institute Tier certification and TIA-942 Rated classification are separate frameworks with separately defined criteria, and a design team needs to establish explicitly which framework the client's brief expects.
