ASHRAE guidelines recommend measuring inlet air temperature at each rack face. At minimum, sensors should be placed at rack intake positions, at hot and cold aisle ends, at CRAC/CRAH unit return air intakes, and at ceiling level. A typical mid-size data centre requires 20–50 sensors to fully characterise the thermal environment and detect hotspots.

ASHRAE A1 class equipment (most enterprise IT) requires inlet air temperature of 15–32°C. ASHRAE A2 allows up to 35°C. Higher ambient temperatures reduce equipment reliability and increase failure rates. Most data centre operators maintain inlet air temperatures of 18–27°C as a practical balance between equipment safety and cooling energy efficiency.

Yes. Wireless temperature sensors (Zigbee, LoRaWAN, WiFi, BLE) are widely used for retrofit monitoring in spaces where cable installation is impractical. Wireless sensors transmit readings to a gateway that connects to BMS or cloud monitoring platforms. Battery life of 2–5 years is typical. For new builds, wired PT100/NTC sensors connected to BMS are preferred for reliability and latency.

Pharmaceutical cold storage is regulated by Schedule P of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and WHO Good Distribution Practice (GDP) guidelines — requiring continuous temperature monitoring with calibrated sensors, data logging, alarm systems and audit trails. Food storage requires HACCP compliance. Hospital operation theatres and isolation rooms have specific temperature requirements under NABH standards.
